Identity Cards Bill passes - we won't have any choice about ID cards if we want passports!13 February The Government won the vote on the Identity Cards Bill by 31 votes. 20 Labour MPs rebelled and voted against the Bill - Bob Wareing MP for West Derby was again the only Liverpool MP to rebel. The amendments made by the House of Lords were overturned - they would have at least made the legislation less open to abuse and more accountable. The government had made one small compromise by allowing that primary legislation (a whole new Act of Parliament) would be required before it could become compulsory for everyone to have an identity card. Remember - the Labour Manifesto at the last election said: “We will introduce ID cards… rolling out initially on a voluntary basis as people renew their passports.”
The House of Lords amended the Bill to ensure that ID registration would not be linked with passports, but this, like the other changes, was defeated. Compulsion by the backdoor Anyone who applies for or renews their passport from 2008 will be issued with an ID card - whether they want one or not! Now the Bill goes back to the House of Lords, who will debate it again in early March. |
