RFID

The proposed new UK ID card/passport will have an RFID chip inside.

Unlike 'chip & pin' credit cards, the ID card won't need to be inserted into a machine to be read, it will just need to pass within the vicinity of a scanner.

The government usually refers to them as 'contactless chips' because they know that there is public concern about the privacy implications of RFID.

For more information about RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips, see www.spychips.org
